More formally known as the Golden Silk Orb-Weaver Spider, this thing’s a monster. The body alone is the size of a peanut, and I mean the double-nut, shell and all. Add the legs and we’re talking five inches across or more!
This gal (and I know it’s a gal because they’re the big ones, the males are puny by comparison – hah!) lives in our front yard and seems to spend most of her time just… well, you know, hanging around.
In fact, renowned spider scientists say that while this spider is the largest found in Florida, and does have venomous poison that is harmful to humans (though not lethal), it’s also one of the “mellowest” spiders here, and is unlikely to bite.
I’m quoting renowned spider scientists here…. so feeling somewhat… reassured?
