Delray Beach, Florida’s Weekend Community Calendar

I should tell you from the get-go that I am not-so-secretly in love with Stephen Colbert (despite being happily married). It’s been a thing ever since his early days on The Daily Show, through nine years of The Colbert Report, and remains still undiminished today. And one of The Late Show bits I consistently enjoy is the public access Community Calendar he pseudo-broadcasts from various small-towns in America (or recently, England), highlighting their unique cultural offerings…

I decided to try one of my own for Delray Beach and the greater Palm Beach County area for this weekend (minus the low-fi audio/video), to give you a small slice of life here in South Florida:

Friday, February 10th

  • Steps-Above Rummage Sale – Clothes, shoes and accessories, jewelry, sports items, electronics, bicycles, toys, tools, children’s clothes and games, crafts, baskets, floral items and more! First Presbyterian Church, Delray Beach. 9am-3pm, also Saturday.
  • Savor Our City Taste Atlantic Avenue – Enjoy a walking tour of Delray Beach and indulge in tastes from several stops along the Avenue. 11am-2pm.
  • Delray Beach Playhouse presents “Once Upon a Posturpedic” – Pillow talk is fine and dandy, but do couples really have to share everything? Billy and Flo’s new mattress is quite comfy, but the conversation? Not so much. 2pm
  • 18th Annual South Florida Garlic Fest – Dedicated to exploring the numerous health & culinary possibilities of garlic, one of South Florida’s premier food and entertainment events. John Prince Park, Lake Worth. 5-11pm. Also all day Sat/
  • Delray Beach Playhouse presents “The Odd Couple” – Felix is a neat-freak who manages to find a fault in everything. Oscar is an unrepentant slob who takes great pleasure in life. Their unlikely friendship has become one of the iconic relationships in American comedy. 2pm, 8pm, also Saturday & Sunday (matinee only).
  • Avery Sommers presents “I Love Being Here With You” at Arts Garage – This special show features songs from the Great American songbook and from Broadway Shows (like Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Chicago). The singer/actress has credentials in both the film and the theater world, including her starring role in the production of “The Devil’s Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith.” Arts Garage, Delray Beach. 8pm.

Saturday, February 11th

  • 18th Annual Everglades Festival – Free outdoor, family and age-friendly festival co-sponsored by ASE. “Mother Nature’s Magic Show” is the theme for this full day of live wild-life presentations, interactive games, guest speakers, exhibits, live music, food, and more, including the chance for a guided hike into this national treasure, America’s Everglads. Loxahatchee NWR, Boynton Beach. 8am-4pm.
  • Delray Beach GreenMarket – More than 65 vendors featuring PBC farm-to-fork produce, just picked citrus and juice, farm fresh eggs, raw milk and butter, grass-fed  (antibiotic and hormone free) Florida beef, poultry, pork and lamb, fragrant artisan baked goods, plenty of gluten free, vegan and sugar free products, fresh cut flowers, plants and lots more. Live musical entertainment each week. Old School Square Park, Delray Beach. 9am to 2pm.
  • Racism Workshop “Dialogue: Racism” – Presented by Cherry Steinwender and Lucy McLaughlin from the Houston-based Center for the Healing of Racism, lunch and refreshments included. Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Boca Raton. 10am-5pm, also Sun 1-5pm. 561-482-2001
  • Ride & Remember Trolley Tour – Enjoy the interactive, personalized stories of Delray Beach’s origins and development. The Spady Museum, Delray Beach.
  • Sandoway Discovery Center – South Florida’s premier coastal ecosystem & marine life center, inspring and transforming  our visitors thru experiential education. Watch our shark, alligator, and stingray feedings to learn all about these amazing local animals! Sandoway House, Delray Beach. Saturday Feeding Schedule: Shark (10:30am); Alligator (1:00pm); Stingray (2:45pm).
  • Artists in the Park – Come browse and purchase original works from some of the finest artists South Florida has to offer! Veterans Park, Delray Beach. 10am-4:30pm, also Sunday.
  • Hearts-n-Bloom Garden Tea Party – Guests will enjoy a Mimosa Garden Stroll, followed by a traditional tea party of the Great Lawn, adjacent to Mounts Butterfly Garden. Attendees are encouraged to wear their best “garden hat” for inclusion in the Designer Hat Fashion Show, and participate in a fun and fantastic garden auction with rare and exotic plants. Mounts Botanical Garden, West Palm Beach. 11am.
  • Pledge for Peace Bike Ride – Join us for a community bike ride through Delray Beach. As we make stops along the way, we’ll learn about our history, and help our community pledge for peace! Start at Pompey Park. 11am-1pm.
  • An Evening with Kenny White at Arts Garage – Hailed by reviewers from the New York Times to the San Francisco Chronicle for his “thrilling and unique” piano playing, White is also a talented singer/songwriter and a successful NYC-based record producer.  Arts Garage, Delray Beach. 8pm.

Sunday, February 12th

  • Chapter 17 Korean War Vets Meeting – A mandatory entry charge of $2 per person will be collected to cover coffee, bagels, and cream cheese for all.   • Nicolas King & Mike Renzi Trio at Arts Garage – Special CD release concert & celebration by one of the hottest singers in the Broadway/cabaret scene. King will perform with legendary pianist Mike Renzi, who’s worked with stars from Tony Bennet to Lady Gaga and Peggy Lee.  Arts Garage, Delray Beach. 7pm.

Monday, February 13th

  • Crest Theatre at Old School Square presents Defying Gravity – A cabaret night for Broadway lovers, celebrating the incredible songbook of three-time, Academy Award winning® composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, with songs from his hit Broadway shows Pippin, Godspell, and Wicked, and the animated films Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
